I've never seen a FLEA move like this!
I filmed and studied larval locomotion of the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis), as well as some slow-motion (6k-20k fps) jumps of the adults too! Plus, there's some cool (gross?) footage I managed to capture of cat flea larvae hatching from eggs in here too.

This beetle hunts with a sticky harpoon!
Переглядів 101 тис.6 місяців тому
I finally found and filmed a Stenus beetle! These rove beetles are famous for hunting springtails by using a projectile mouthpart (a modified labium) with sticky pads at the end. I collected the individual in this video in Crossnore, NC in August of 2023. Long time Ant Lab collaborator Dr. Matt Bertone helped me find it and he took the still images you see of it in this video! follow him on X/T...

The Weirdest Insect I've Ever Filmed! BAT FLY
Переглядів 765 тис.10 місяців тому
Wow, bat flies are bizarre creatures! I went out to find one of these extraordinary ectoparasitic insects with my museum colleague, Lisa Gatens (naturalsciences.org/staff/lisa-gatens), as she was trapping and banding bats in the North Carolina's Coastal Plain. The bat fly in this video was collected off of a Southeastern myotis (Myotis austroriparius) bat and is likely the bat fly species Basil...

Snapping Shrimp uses Cavitation Bubble. It’s super effective
You should have said something about the fly waving its front legs with lil balls of liquid on the ends. Is this done to catch a bat .
Im from the uk, I thought you meant 'thunderbugs' aka thrips. They would need a very special set to film due to their tiny size. Thanks for the reminder to hunt for our own firefly type bug though - lampyris noctiluca
My grandma found a Cecropia Moth on a shrub in her flowerbed here in Oklahoma! I’m not entirely sure why it was there since these things like to hang out in wooded areas…and I live in a neighborhood with pasture land right behind my house…
It’s actually kind of genius. If you can hurt it, you latch on. If you can’t hurt it, you fling yourself away from it.
IF THAT THING EVOLVES IT'S WINGS BACK, WE'RE DOOMED!
Count and tell me the number of times the word bat or bats is said
I didn’t know how cartoonishly adorable it was ❤ thank you
Oh, they're not just in my backyard, they're in my room. I don't know how they get in my house, much less why they always gravitate toward my room. I guess they know I'll put them back outside.
I use to see so many in nyc in the summer
i LOVE how there are people who are only just now finding out that these things are real and not just a movie trope to make summer seem more romantic or whatever
Just flies away like Weeeeeee
I've lived on the Oregon Coast most of my life (save for living in Spokane for 12 years due to school and work). I've never seen a lightening bug in my 38 years of life. I've seen videos with them glowing, but never an up close picture. They are so cute!!!
I just always thought they were all over. They are pretty neat to look at at night. I'm watching them now in my backyard.
It's so cute! It's like it's saying, "Whooppee! Look at me!"
Adorable
Stop using short!
No
Amazing footage as always ❤
Wait THATS a fire fly, the look way cooler up close
What’s happening to them? Not in the video, but I’ve noticed there’s less lightning bugs outside in the summer.
I'm pretty sure they're slowly going to be endangered
Mostly habitat destruction and pesticide use. Since the 80s, total global insect population has decreased by 20-30%, which a lot of entomologists consider past the point of reversal.
Sadly pesticides and habitat loss. There are certain times and places you can see them better but unfortunately blame mosquitos, midges, and gnats that the pesticides also get rid of. 😢
It's really happy to fly! YYYIIIIIIPPPPEEEEEE!!!
Woah, they looka lot more gnarly up close than what I thought!
I've always considered these bugs the least offensive to look at, along with most other beetles.
Does… the bite hurt?
One punch man of the sea

Ever since I played a game with moth wing I’m In love with moths!!!
he looks so happy. that's cute
Decapitation ant
They fly now? They fly now.
It's a spider?
Spotted one of these at work near a trash can, these things are huge, and also beautiful
This could give you nightmares!
yey

What? Earwigs can FLY? Now I can never sleep!
5:04 Everyones mug shot comes out terrible.
The tail looks like a real gross blunt
cute but camponatus better
I always imagined them to be menacing and capable of strategic jumps. This looks more like they should be accompanied by a looney toons spring sound as they blast off, seemingly in just whatever direction.
Is that Mildred? And is that Dr. Adrian's notorious finger? Mildred is said to be badass. She's featured in an episode of True Facts. So is Dr. Adrian Smith's finger.
The walking fly
Today I was bit by a large ant. It was on the bottom of my thigh. I didn’t know they bite and string at the same time, so that explains the extra mark.😂
How does regular Ant bite you if a trap jaw can't?
"Their attack has to be fast because their prey has one of the fastest known animal escape jumps". Prey at 1:03 getting attacked repeatedly and not once escape jumping ˃̣◡˂̣
4:57 its important to mention that larval fleas have a permanent derpy face.
